A Study in Colossians: Part 9

Continuing in our study through the book of Colossians, preacher Lucas Macdonald explores in detail each of the four strands of false teaching which were permeating the church in Colossae - philosophy (Christ plus knowledge) , legalism (Christ plus works of righteousness), mysticism (Christ plus higher subjective spiritual experience), and asceticism (Christ plus rigorous self-denial).  Lucas closed this sermon with a look back at chapter 1:15-19 of all that we have in Christ.  The false teachers of this day were pushing that Christ alone was not enough for salvation - but the reality we know is that in Christ, we have ALL!

The Five Solas of the Reformation: Soli Deo Gloria

Every one of the Solas of the Reformation finds its’ ultimate purpose in “Soli Deo Gloria” – to the glory of God alone. In this fifth and final sermon of our series of rediscovery of the Protestant Reformation, Pastor Daniel Kriss defines and expounds on the expansive topic of the glory of God. Firstly defining the glory of God, which included exploration of God’s absolute glory, as well as his attributed glory, and moving into an overview displaying how each of the five Solas actively

The Five Solas of the Reformation: Solo Christo

The very heart and centre of the gospel is Solo Christo = through Christ alone. In this fourth of our October sermon series rediscovering the truths of the Protestant Reformation, Pastor Daniel Kriss brings us this comprehensive overview of the doctrine of the all-sufficiency of Christ for salvation.  Beginning with a short glossary of important terms, our attention was then drawn to three ways in which the Reformers declared the exclusivity of Christ as the ONLY means of salvation. One dan

The Five Solas of the Reformation: Sola Fide

Justification by faith alone is the substance and the heart of true Christianity.  In this third of our sermon series on the Reformation, Lucas Macdonald preaches on the topic of “Sola Fide” (by faith alone).  A solid definition was given of salvation by means of justification by faith, and it was noted that this is solely a work of Christ as opposed to our subjective experience.  Interspersed throughout are illuminating and insightful quotes by Martin Luther, as we

The Five Solas of the Reformation: Sola Gracia

The Biblical doctrine of grace alone for salvation is the second of the Five Solas which the Reformers upheld to the death.
In this part two of our Reformation Month, Pastor Daniel Kriss preaches this message entitled “Sola Gracia: The First Pillar of the Reformation”. Beginning by adding to our growing glossary of historical Reformation terms, the definition of the term “grace” is then expounded, including an overview of of what grace is not, as well as an

The Five Solas of the Reformation: Sola Scriptura

During October, Mount Cathedral will be looking back at the Protestant Reformation which took place 500 years ago, and the Five Solas which form the basis of the gospel truth upheld by the Reformers, as we remember those who were martyred for upholding these precious realities.
Pastor Daniel Kriss begins this special time of re-discovering the doctrinal, gospel truths of the Reformation with this sermon entitled “Sola Scriptura: The Foundation of the Reformation”

Correspondence from Christ (Pt 5): Sardis

The church in the ancient, wealthy city of Sardis is the fifth recipient of a letter from Jesus Christ as recorded in Revelation. In this sermon continuing our series entitled “Correspondence from Christ”, Pastor Daniel Kriss draws our attention firstly to the unusual designation of Christ as the One who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. Moving on to the concerns which Christ had for this church of their current status of being alive, but in reality being spiritually dead, the le

Correspondence from Christ (Pt 4): Thyatira

The ancient city of Thyatira in Revelation chapter 2 was the smallest of the seven addressed in this chapter, yet the church situated there received the longest letter from Jesus Christ.  In our sermon today, continuing our series entitled “Correspondence from Christ”, Pastor Daniel broke down this letter to the “tolerant” church of Thyatira.  While they received commendation from Christ in relation to their love, faith, service, perseverance and growth – all areas in wh

A Study in Colossians: Part 8

In this sermon, preacher Lucas Macdonald continues for us his journey through the book of Colossians. Looking firstly at the divine nature present bodily in Christ, this message then touched on the foolishness of the world’s philosophies, the representation of baptism, our salvation as a powerful work of God, and our inability to please God or save ourselves of our own strength.  Lucas concluded by looking at various scriptures on Jesus’ healing of physical sickness, relating that to Jesus’ healing of our spiritual sickness, noting that His work of healing is always entirely, wholly, completely.

Correspondence from Christ (Pt 3): Pergamum

Little-known Pergamum is the third of the seven churches to receive a letter from Jesus Christ in Revelation chapter 2.  In this sermon, Pastor Daniel Kriss digs deep into this letter to help us fully understand the meaning and gravity of the message to this persecuted church.  Looking firstly at the designation of Christ as the holder of the double-edged sword, moving to the commendations Christ had for Pergamum, the areas of compromise they were slipping into, the command of Christ t
